What Are the Benefits of Massage Therapy for Seniors?

Maintaining a healthy mind and body is important at any age, which makes massage therapy a great option for those looking to improve their physical and emotional wellbeing by alleviating aches, pain, injury, stress, etc.

For aging adults, massage therapy can be especially appealing because of age-related conditions that may bring pain and discomfort, such as joint inflammation, poor circulation, arthritis, or osteoporosis. Whether seniors are experiencing certain physical areas of concern that they would like to address, or they are looking to maintain a relatively pain-free lifestyle, massage therapy might be the right option.

Below is an in-depth look at some of the common conditions that affect those over 65 years of age, and how massage therapy can benefit.

Massage Therapy Can Improve Circulation

Several factors can lead to poor circulation in seniors, such as a sedentary lifestyle or chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Poor blood flow can cause a number of symptoms, including pain, cramps, and swollen limbs.

When circulation is poor, oxygen and other essential nutrients are not being properly delivered to the muscles.  Massage can help to directly reverse this. The act of massaging involves physical pressure on soft tissue, which is believed can help move blood through areas of your body that are restricted. What results is better flow and increased circulation, which can lead to better overall body function.

Massage Can Treat Arthritis

There are over 100 different types of arthritis, all of which can impact individuals of any age. Currently, 1 in 2 seniors in Canada over 65 have arthritis, and it is projected that by the year 2040, nearly 60% of women over 65 years old will develop this health condition. Arthritis not only impacts physical health but can also disrupt daily activities due to discomfort. Activities around the house might seem more difficult, or running errands may take more effort, as many who live with arthritis report mobility difficulties.

Massage therapy can directly tackle some of the physical pains associated with arthritis. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases states that when done by a trained registered massage therapist, numerous massage techniques can help to manage pain and improve joint motion, which can lead to an overall improvement of muscle flexibility. Depending on the type of arthritis, different types of massage can help with different symptoms. For example, those with rheumatoid arthritis can benefit from massage techniques that increase circulation, while those with osteoarthritis can benefit from the reduction in swelling and pain that massage offers.

Massage Can Increase Flexibility

As we get older, our muscles tend to get rigid and tight, which can often result in inactivity due to pain that causes limited mobility. To help combat this, massage works to loosen those tight muscles and joints, which can lead to a greater range of motion. Since massage targets important areas of the body like our muscles, tissues, tendons, and joints, various therapeutic techniques can help lead to more joint fluidity and elasticity, which can lead to reduced pain and a lesser chance of injury.

Massage Assists in Neurological Disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Massage therapy is known to help those who have Alzheimer’s disease become more aware of their body, generate an increase in alertness, and reduce feelings associated with the disease such as confusion and anxiety. Therapeutic touch has also shown to be effective in increasing the quality of life among those with this disorder, as many feel nurtured and less anxious thanks to the reduction of stress hormones in the body while receiving a massage.

Massage Therapy Improves Mental Health

About 15% of seniors in Canada experience depressive symptoms, which can cause a number of physical and emotional symptoms. Although mental illness can arise for a number of reasons, often social isolation or chronic disease can cause depression in seniors, leading to symptoms like sleep problems, fatigue, pain, etc.

Massage has been shown to have a direct impact on our brains, down to a chemical level. When we experience stress, for example, our cortisol level rises, and we begin to feel those very physical symptoms that come along with it. However, while receiving a massage, our serotonin levels (the mood-regulating hormone) and dopamine levels (the hormone that makes us feel happy) increases up to an average of 30%.

Even at the best of times, daily life can be anywhere from difficult to downright stressful. Add in the uncertainty and worry caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s no wonder many of us feel especially stressed out or anxious these days. As the months linger on and the weather worsens, you may feel as though your mental health is starting to suffer, too.

With a reliable COVID-19 vaccine likely still several months away, you can help alleviate the stress of living through a pandemic with regular massage therapy treatments. There is much more to it than just relaxing your sore muscles. Here’s how regular massage can improve your mental health in these troubling times.

Massage therapy reduces stress hormones and relieves depression:

Massage therapy helps reduce some of the stress and tension that accumulates in our muscles during periods of high pressure or elevated anxiety. Besides making your body feel better, regular massage can also reduce cortisol levels, a hormone our bodies release when we feel stressed out or anxious.

Massage has also been linked with increased oxytocin levels, sometimes known as the cuddle hormone because it’s commonly released when we experience human touch, usually from a loved one. However, research has shown that the human contact experienced during a massage has the same effect, helping to diminish feelings of loneliness and the sense of disconnection.

Massage can help you sleep better:

Ever find yourself tossing and turning at night as troubling thoughts race through your tired brain? Then when morning comes, you’re not properly rested and ready to face another tough day. That night, when you really need to sleep, the vicious cycle starts all over again.

Massage can help raise serotonin levels, a natural chemical that contributes to a sense of well-being and happiness, and dopamine, which affects mood. Both can also have an impact on the quality of our sleep. A deep, relaxing massage can help your body unwind and get the rest you need to improve your mood and restore your mental health.

Taking care of yourself is important during stressful times.
Massage offers an oasis of calm away from the rest of the world:

At Massage Experts, every effort is made to help you detach from the ‘real world’ and embrace relaxation. Soft music, soft lighting, and a calming atmosphere all combine to create an oasis of wellness; a place where you can’t be reached by e-mail or bothered by calls. Even if it’s just for an hour, the opportunity to unplug and briefly leave our troubles behind can make a big difference to our mental health, improving our ability to concentrate and focus.

We all need something to look forward to, especially in a World where our ‘normal’ has been turned upside down by such a surreal virus. A regular massage appointment might be the escape you need and an opportunity for you to recharge and feel better about yourself.

If you’re suffering from anxiety, depression, or insomnia, be sure to tell your Registered Massage Therapist what you’re experiencing. That way, they will be able to tailor your treatments to improve your physical health and your mental health and well-being as well Massage Experts offers a special first visit rate to help welcome you to their clinic. Cupping therapy is an ancient method that dates back to 1,550 B.C. This method is still applied and used in today’s modern society to help treat many various conditions.

Many of you reading this blog today may have never heard of cupping therapy. But something or better yet, someone who you may be familiar with is, Michael Phelps, an American former competitive swimmer, and most successful Olympian of all time. Coincidentally, this all-star swears by cupping treatment to keep him well prepared for his competitive endeavours.

Now that I got your attention…

The cupping mechanism consists of creating a vacuum-like suction on the skin, which will raise the skin, fascia and deeper muscle layers to the surface of the cup. Cupping draws the old, non-circulating stagnant blood and toxins, up to the skin’s surface and away from the injury.

The suction is typically done by a pump, which attaches to the cup, creating the suction which ensues negative pressure. There is converging evidence that cupping can induce comfort and relaxation on a systemic level, resulting in an increase in endogenous opioid production in the brain, which leads to improved pain control.  In addition, cupping also leaves round purple marks or circular bruises on the skin; these marks may begin to fade after several days but can remain for two to three weeks depending on the severity of stagnation.

Cupping Benefits:
  • Improves blood flow
  • Removes toxins in the body
  • Migraines & headaches
  • Anxiety & depression
  • Improves posture
  • Removes muscles knots
  • Breaks down scar tissue
  • Reduces cellulite
  • Relieves headaches & migraines
  • Enhances sense of well-being
  • Eliminates toxins
  • Increases lymphatic flow
  • Promotes cell-repair
  • Reduces swelling
Side-effects of Cupping:
  • May cause pain (it is normal to feel sore for a few days after the cupping treatment.)
  • Burning sensation (very rare)
  • Dizziness (since your blood will be flowing at a faster pace than usual)
  • Sweating (cupping may cause heat in your tissues)
  • Nausea (very common)
  • Lightheadedness (if you get up from the massage table too fast)
  • Feeling faint (due to sudden blood rush to the head)

*It is advised that you don’t eat anything 2-3 hours prior to the cupping treatment. Don’t use cupping if you use blood-thinning medication.*

Furthermore, avoid cupping if you have:

  • a sunburn
  • a wound
  • skin ulcers
  • experienced recent trauma
  • an internal organ disorder

Cupping therapy isn’t recommended for everyone. Extra caution should be taken for the following groups:

  • Children under 4 years old
  • Seniors
  • Pregnant women
  • Those who are currently menstruating

Snow Shoveling is a necessary repetitive task that most Canadians have to participate in during the winter season. With any repetitive task, injury can be a result if done inefficiently.   In this article, I aim to transform all of you into efficient shovelling machines to address this issue.

Below you will find three tips to make your shovelling form more ergonomic to minimize any injury to your back, so it does not interfere with your significantly more exciting winter plans.

Tip 1:

Push, not lift. Work smart, not hard. Pushing a weight is significantly less stressful on your body than lifting. If the snowbanks on the side of your driveway are low and you can push the snow off, do so. No reason to work harder than you need to.

Tip 2:

When pushing, keep your shoulders and hips square. This position places your spine in a neutral position, which is optimal for pushing and lifting. Injuries to your lower back tend to occur when we run into unforeseen twisting motions with a weight. If we look at how we are anatomically designed, the lumbar spine is made to bend forward and back (flexion and extension), not to twist (this is the job of our thoracic spine – chest and rib cage area). Choosing a shovel with a trolley like-handle that allows you to push with both hands as if you were pushing a shopping cart is a good tool for everybody to have in their garage.

Tip 3:

If you have to lift, bend at the hips and lift with the leg; do not lift with the low back. Although lifting with your low back feels easier, it is incredibly inefficient, and it increases the risk of injury to the area. Bending at the hips will lower your center of gravity and engage the muscles in your buttock and legs, which are anatomically larger and can exert more force in comparison to the muscles in your back.  Furthermore, when you do lift snow with your shovel, it is best practice to dump the snow directly in front of you. Again we want to limit the amount of twisting in the low back for the reasons mentioned in tip 2.

As a fun mental exercise, try to plan your shovelling route to reduce the amount of lifting that you must do. I was taught to start at the midpoint of the width of your driveway and shovel along the length of your driveway. Doing so splits the driveway into two smaller half compartments. Then, continue to shovel, addressing one half of the driveway at a time. Ultimately, this reduces the demand on your body by reducing the snow you must push and lift with each repetition.

In this busy world, we live in, many people find it difficult to find the time to take care of themselves. For those in a caretaking position such as nurses, parents, those working in elder care or those taking care of an infirmed family member, self-care can be even more difficult.

Caretakers can experience feelings of guilt when taking time out of caring for others to take care of themselves. After all, others are counting on you, it is your duty to put them first, isn’t it?

The Toll of Caretaking

The answer is no. Yes, those in your care count on you. But how can you take the necessary steps to care for others, when you have not extended that same courtesy to yourself?

Caretaking is a full-time job in itself, alongside the other possible jobs one may have in a day. Your body, mind, and soul need the support and care that you are extending to those around you!

Here are some of the physical and mental hardships your body may be dealing with

  • Fatigue
  • Body aches and pains
  • A build-up of muscle tension from physical exertion
  • Increase in stress
  • Build up of negative chemicals such as cortisol and lactic acid

These side effects not only affect your wellbeing but it can also negatively impact your ability to take care of those who are most important to you.

Benefits of Massage

The good news is, there are things you can do to counter these negative impacts. One of which being, massage therapy.

Massage therapy is just that … it is therapy. Therapy for your mind and your body.

Rather than thinking of massage as a luxury you should feel guilty for indulging in, think of it as a tool you can use not just to feel better, but to improve your capacity.

Here is how you may benefit from massage therapy

  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Improve flexibility
  • Decrease stress
  • Better quality of sleep
  • Decrease cortisol
  • Improve sense of well-being

I bet you didn’t expect something as simple as a massage to serve all of these needs!

Giving over just one hour every month for a massage can make a real difference in not only your physical wellbeing, but your energy will radiate from the inside out.

Make Your Wellness a Priority

As well as a regular massage, there are some other steps you can work into your routine to maximize your self-care.

  • A healthy, balanced diet
  • Regular stretching or yoga
  • Regular exercise
  • Meditation
Self-Care Isn’t A Luxury

As you can see, there’s no need to feel guilty about taking the time to take care of yourself. Contrary to your beliefs before you read this, by devoting a few hours to wellness, this will have a positive impact on yourself and those under your care, too.

Contact your local Massage Experts clinic to find a therapist that works for you and get started on a path to self-care!

Office workers need massage therapy just as much as athletes do. Maybe more!

It doesn’t seem physically hard, does it? You sit for eight hours a day in front of a computer. Maybe you walk to lunch, or down the hall to a meeting, but that’s about it. Now you ask, how can this be harmful to your body?

The answer: it is, and for many reasons.

Because it’s true, there is starting to be some awareness of the risks of poor posture. But even if you have an ergonomically correct chair and workstation, the risks remain high. It’s simply a matter of too many hours without full movement. Inevitably, you start to lean in toward the computer and slouch in your chair. This puts an increased strain on your lower back and neck – it’s inevitable. And as you repeat the same mistakes, day after day, your body’s structure can actually change, causing more long-term misalignment. Rounded shoulders, tightening of chest muscles, and more persistent pain, are some of the first signs you will notice.

Fortunately, there’s a way to deal with it: regular massage therapy treatments.

Benefits include:
  • Reducing stress
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved posture
  • Fewer headaches
  • Decreased muscle tension and pain

Along with massage therapy, you’ll benefit from stretching exercises, movement exercises, proper nutrition and just taking the time every day to allow your body to unwind and relax.

A professional Registered Massage Therapist can not only provide the massage therapy you need but will work with you to develop your own self-care program to keep your body aligned and free from stress and pain.

Fortunately, this assistance is close: our clinics have a team of well-trained and experienced professionals who understand exactly what your body goes through, and how to fix it.  Massage Experts will give your body exactly what it’s asking for: consistent relief from stress accomplished with a personalized program delivered in a warm and welcoming setting.

I think we all can collectively agree that everyone loves vacations – the benefits are never-ending!

The excitement of discovering new places, exotic sights, and foods, fun with the kids…and most of all, that much-needed break from the working world. We eagerly plan, we count down the days, and usually, we can’t wait until the next one.

Physical stress? Wear and tear? Oh, sure – we don’t deny it. But we don’t think about the potential damage to our bodies, and the need to repair that damage when we return.

Vacation Side Effects
  • Prolonged bad posture – on a long car ride, or in an airline seat, or simply too many hours sitting in one spot
  • Lifting and carrying heavy luggage (and, perhaps, kids!)
  • Jet lag and lack of sleep
  • Too much rich or salty food
  • Aches and pains (if not injuries) from sports, especially if you haven’t done them since the previous vacation
  • Uncomfortable sleep in a new bed

Most of us just accept it as part of the price of a holiday. We might even joke about needing a “vacation from the vacation.”:

Post-Vacation Massage

But there is no reason to neglect our bodies during the trip, and even more so, no reason to continue that neglect after we return. Therefore, gentle stretching every day, plus lots of water, will help keep your body in better health. And then, promptly on your return, schedule a Massage Therapy session. There are many good reasons:

  • To relieve the aches and pains you may have acquired while traveling
  • An important check to make sure they are only minor aches and pains, and nothing more serious is going on
  • Reduce your anxiety and mental stress (because let’s face it, the logistics of getting there and getting back can be very stressful)
  • It will help good sleeping habits

In fact, the benefits of that post-vacation massage are so significant, that you should book the appointment before you go away. Make it an automatic part of your vacation checklist!

So give the team at Massage Experts a call and book an appointment with one of our Registered Massage Therapists and best of all we can do direct insurance billing so the cost can be covered.  Your pre and post-vacation getaway await!

When you think about getting a massage, you usually think about a highly trained Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) using their hands to release knots and tensions in overused muscles. But there is another medium that can be used for massages: smooth, heated stones placed on your body. Hot Stone Massage offers so many therapeutic benefits.

If you are interested in learning more about the different ways you can give your body what it needs. Here is what you need to know.

How it works

The stones are usually basalt, which is rich in iron and retains heat. They are volcanic stones, worn smooth by river water or polished by hand and they range in size from large back stones to tiny stones for in between toes.

In general, the treatment consists of the therapist placing pre-heated stones on specific points along the back, legs, and between the toes. The heat warms and relaxes the muscles, and the RMT then places other stones in the palms of his or her hands and uses them to massage the body. A typical session ranges between 60 minutes when working on neck and shoulders, and 90 minutes for a full-body treatment.

How it can benefit you

The warmth and weight of the stones are relaxing and has many therapeutic benefits including:

  • Alleviation of aches and pains
  • Increased blood flow and improvement of poor circulation
  • Relief from joint pain, muscle tension, headache, sciatic pain, and even menstrual pain
  • Improved lymphatic circulation (your body’s natural way to detox)
  • Better sleep, due to lowering cortisol levels with stress
  • Promotion of overall relaxation and a peaceful state of homeostasis
Is it safe? Is there anything to be concerned about?

Hot Stone Massage is completely safe. The RMT carefully checks the temperature of the stones using a thermometer and on their forearm.

There are a few possible after-effects to be aware of. Redness and increased circulation is completely normal and may last up to 12 hours. This is due to this being a heat treatment. Depending on your skin type the degree of redness or skin irritation will vary.

Hot Stone Massage promotes the release of toxins deep in your muscles, which may cause side effects such as dizziness, nausea, frequent urination, headaches or fatigue, for a few days after your treatment. By drinking plenty of water, these side effects can be alleviated. You should monitor how your body reacts to the treatment. If you find you are sensitive to heat, it is a good idea to avoid heat for 12-24 hours after treatment. Also during those first 24 hours, avoid heavy lifting or excessive exercise. Your body is detoxifying – give it the time and space it needs to relax and rest.

Booking your first massage is definitely the first and most important step in inviting wellness into your life, but it can also come with a bit of uncertainty about what’s next. In this article, we’ll go over what you can expect in your first therapeutic session and what can be required of both you and your therapist in order to get the most out of this experience.

Pre Massage

Firstly, try to arrive about 15 minutes before the actual appointment time. There is no specific

dress code to follow, as long as you feel comfortable and relaxed. Where possible, leave jewelry at home and do not use heavily scented products. Those 15 minutes are to give yourself plenty of time to fill out your health history form and give your therapist time to review it before calling you in.

Please be as thorough as you can be when filling your health history out, including any diagnosed medical conditions, medications and areas of concern. This is vital information, as treatments are made specifically to the individual. Therefore, health history plays a huge role in how your therapist will approach your treatment. Rest assured that all information will be kept strictly confidential.

Consultation

Once you have filled out your health history form, your therapist will escort you to the treatment room, marking the start of your treatment time. Initial intake may take a few minutes, as your therapist will want to discuss your treatment goals with you. He or she may need to administer a physical assessment at this time in order to better serve your needs, and then he or she will go over their plan for the treatment. Communication is an essential part of treatment, so feel free to ask your therapist any questions.

Beginning your Treatment

Next, your therapist will step out of the room for a few minutes to allow you to prepare. You should undress to your comfort level. This means different things to different people. For best results, remove any clothing and remaining jewelry on the area that will be worked on. But this therapeutic session is about YOU! Therefore, the most important thing is for you to feel relaxed and comfortable. So anything you are not comfortable doing, your therapist will work around it in order to fit your needs.

Any area not currently being worked on by your therapist will remain covered by the sheets and blanket. For example, during a back massage, everything from the hips down is covered, if a leg is being massaged, only that leg is uncovered, etc.

You should then make yourself comfortable on the table. The therapist should instruct you as to whether to start face up or face down. Facedown is standard, so if unsure, go for that. Get between the sheets, and rest your face in the donut-shaped face cradle provided, pulling the sheets back up to keep warm and covered.

Once your therapist returns, the massage will begin. If during the massage you are uncomfortable or find that the pressure is too much, let your therapist know. Many massage therapists will check in with you about this, but you don’t need to wait to be asked. Your comfort is of utmost importance, so please do not worry about being open about how it is going. Likewise, if you have any questions during the treatment, feel free to communicate them.

Which brings us to the matter of talking during a treatment. Some people like to chat, and some like to relax and drift. Either is fine, so please do not feel obligated in either direction. Again, your comfort is very important, so go with what works best for you here.

Post Massage

Towards the end of your treatment time, your therapist will leave the room to allow you time to get up and dress. Please take your time and be careful. A massage can cause mild feelings of light-headedness. Therefore, it is suggested that you sit up slowly and wait a few seconds before getting to your feet. Make certain to gather up any jewelry that you may have removed for the treatment.

When your therapist returns, they will check in on you to see how you are feeling after the treatment and may reassess you after your treatment. Additionally, they may give you some home care instructions.  If anything is unclear, once again we encourage you to ask.

The session will conclude with your therapist escorting you back to the lobby.

Now that you have been walked through all the ins and outs of your first massage, the next step is simple. Book your first massage and let the journey begin! We, here at Massage Experts, can assure you, you won’t regret it.
